Just got back from a panel at the Academy of Motion Pictures Art and Sciences. The 12th Annual Mark Davis Celebration of Animation.
It was moderated by Charles Solomon who lectures once a year at UCLA. One of my co-workers at the student store is friends with Charles and very kindly put me and a guest on the guest list for the panel. Which doesn't mean much since tickets to these things are cheap, but I got to go to the reception beforehand and we had reserved seats in the front of the theater. Kind of cool to say I'm a guest of Charles Solomon. :)

The panel itself was awesome. Andreas Deja has always been my animation idol out of the current animators. During the reception I commented to my friend that its so cool to be in the same room as Andreas and then discovered that Andreas was kind of behind me hiding near the wall. Luckily I think he was far enough away to not hear me gush. And James Baxter is my new idol. He was so wonderful during his presentation, very sweet and funny and completely inspiring. Eric Goldberg was hilarious as usual and Pete Docter made some great story points. The highlight of the night was when Andreas did a presentation, with the other panelists adding their insights as well, showing many different drawing examples of the Nine Old Men of Disney. It was something I've never seen before. A chance to see these artists' rough drawings and to see how different their styles were. It was awe inspiring to see how each one of them thought out a drawing or scene and to see the improvement of their draftsmanship over the decades they animated at Disney.

Overall a great night and something I desperately needed to lift my spirits a bit.

I'll be off to the folks this weekend for Mother's Day. For any of the mothers on my F-list, happy early Mother's Day.
